Even though Swan Hill is a long way from the coast, we do have many regional lakes we can explore at our leisure. These lovely waterways have so much to offer. Whether you’re into watersports, enjoy leisurely strolls along the shoreline or just love to sit and soak up the sun overlooking the water, there are many great spots for you to visit.

Here’s a rundown of some of the best regional lakes around Swan Hill.

Lake Boga

Undoubtedly, you’ll be familiar with Lake Boga if you’ve lived in the region for a while. It’s located just 15 minutes south of Swan Hill and is a much-loved holiday spot for campers.

Visitors to the lake can enjoy swimming, waterskiing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, boating and, of course, fishing. While the lake is very popular in summer, it’s the perfect place to visit on a nice sunny winter’s day.

There’s a flat concrete and gravel track that you can take around the lake. Along the way, stop at the restored turtle lagoon and look out for waterbirds on and around the lake, including pelicans.

With plenty of picnic areas to enjoy a break, there’s even a lakeside café where you can get something to eat if you haven’t brought your own.

Lake Tutchewop

Lake Tutchewop is a Ramsar-listed wetland conservation area near Kerang. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching and bushwalking. The lake is a saltwater lake and very popular for migrating birds.

Lake Cullen

A little further south on the way to Kerang, you’ll find Lake Cullen, which is also a wildlife reserve. It has vehicle access as there’s a road that runs along the western border of the lake. This lake is also a very popular spot for birdwatching.

Kangaroo Lake

Kangaroo Lake is around 20 minutes south of Swan Hill as you travel along the Murray Valley Highway. You’ll actually drive past Lake Tutchewop before you get to it.

This freshwater recreational lake has its own boat ramp as well as a caravan park right on the foreshore. The caravan park is well appointed with both powered and unpowered sites as well as cabins. A bonus: it’s pet-friendly and a great spot to spend a few days enjoying the peace and quiet.

There are picnic tables situated along the foreshore and a gravel path where you can enjoy a walk with the dog while looking over the still waters. Motorboats are allowed on the lake and you can both swim and fish in the lake.

While you’re visiting, check out Gorton Point, where former Prime Minister, Sir John Gorton, had his family home and farm. And when you need a cool drink or a hearty meal after visiting the lake, head to the Mystic Park Hotel, just a short drive away.

Lake Charm

Another popular recreational lake heading south along the Murray Valley Highway, this lake is a drawcard for water sports enthusiasts. Pack your waterski or enjoy a leisurely paddle in your canoe or kayak.

You’ll also find a couple of great caravan parks along the foreshore if you want to stay a few days. If you time your visit just right, you might even be able to sit and watch one of the regular Ski Racing Victoria events held here.
