Now is the time to prepare your garden if you want to sell your Swan Hill home in spring. If you put in the effort during winter, your garden will shine once the weather warms up. A beautiful garden that is well-maintained and full of colour will attract a load of potential buyers.

Rejuvenate your lawn

Most lawns in Swan Hill will be relatively dormant in winter but will spring into lush new growth if you spend a little time rejuvenating yours now. Here are some things to do:

  • Aerate your lawn. If the ground under your lawn has become a little compacted and there’s a lot of thatch in the grass, this is the perfect time to aerate it and break up that thatch. You can do this manually just with a garden fork by poking holes all over the lawn area. Alternatively, if your lawn is large, you can hire a lawn aerator and get the job done quicker.
  • Seed any bare patches. If you seed the bare patches in your lawn now, the new grass will have plenty of time to establish a decent root system. This means your lawn will look nice and lush once spring arrives.
  • Fertilise your grass. Now is also a great time to add some fertiliser to your lawn. Any winter rain will wash the fertiliser down into the soil where it will be available to the roots once new growth starts. Remember that nitrogen promotes growth and greenness but potassium promotes lusher growth.

Tidy up the front yard for amazing kerb appeal

We all know how important kerb appeal is when it comes to selling a home. Many potential buyers will do a drive-by first before they come to an open house. For this reason, you want your home to stand out from all the others in your area. Here are some things you can do:

  • Trim all the shrubs to give them a nice shape. If you do this now, they’ll be lush with new growth once the warmer weather arrives. Don’t do too much pruning to shrubs that will flower early in spring because you might cut off the developing flower buds. You also want to leave ones that are flowering now such as camellias and rhododendrons. These should be trimmed once they’ve finished flowering.
  • Tidy up the garden beds. Make sure that you weed and tidy up your garden beds so they look neat and inviting. You can consider planting some spring flowering annuals once any predictions of frost are over.
  • Mulch your garden beds. Garden beds that are freshly mulched look absolutely fantastic. If you lay the mulch thick enough, you’ll prevent a lot of weeds from coming up in spring. Plus, the mulch will eventually break down and help to improve your soil.

Create a mini herb garden for your courtyard or patio

If you only have a small outdoor area, you can still create a lovely green space in your backyard or patio. Now is the perfect time to start a mini herb garden as it will give the herbs a chance to grow and look lush when spring arrives. Here are some tips:

  • Create a vertical herb garden using an old pallet. Old pallets are ideal for creating a herb garden because they take up less space and look fantastic. All you need is a pallet, some weed mat, and a staple gun. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that show you how to do this. You can even paint the exterior of the pallet to match your décor.
  • Use a large plastic tub to create a mini greenhouse. You can cut holes in the bottom for drainage and fill it with soil to plant straight into. Alternatively, you can place a layer of gravel in the bottom and then sit your plant pots on top of the gravel. This will allow the water to drain into the gravel but the roots of your plants won’t be sitting in water.
  • Install some pots with colourful flowers. If you go to your local garden centre or even Bunnings, you’ll be able to find pots that will clip onto a fence or railing. Fill these with colourful spring flowers or even herbs.
