Having enough light in your home is good for your health and wellbeing. As human beings we actually need a daily dose of sunshine to stay happy and healthy. Getting enough light means that we’re happier, have improved brain function and keep our bodies healthy.

So, if your Swan Hill home is a bit dark, we’ve come up with some ways that you can brighten up your home and let more light in.

Add more windows

It might seem obvious that the more windows that you have in your home, the more light will come in. But, it also depends on the type of windows that you install. Nowadays, it’s possible to get large windows that have minimal framework. This means that there’s more glass to let the light in.

Have a look at the windows in your home and consider whether installing different types of windows will help to improve the light. You might also have rooms with small windows or just blank walls. Would installing larger windows improve the amount of light coming in?

Also consider the back of your house to see whether installing large sliding doors or even French doors would be feasible. This might mean a major renovation, but the end result will be well worth it.

Install skylights or solar tubes

Skylights or solar tubes are one of the best ways to increase the light in your home. They’re popular for high-traffic areas in your home such as the bathroom and the kitchen. The benefit of these is that you’ll get extra light without losing any privacy.

Consider adding a skylight or solar tube in the hallway, too, as these areas are often quite dark. And, if you install a skylight in your bathroom, on a clear night you could even enjoy a relaxing bath by moonlight.

Add mirrors and glass, and lighten your décor

Installing large mirrors is also a clever way to increase the light in your home. If you position a large mirror opposite the windows in your home, the mirror will reflect the light from the window back into the room. This effectively increases the amount of light in any room in your home.
Another thing to consider is your interior decor. Decorating with glass will allow more light reflection while minimising visual clutter.

It’s well-known that dark colours absorb light while light ones will reflect the light. Therefore, consider keeping your walls and ceilings an uplifting light colour and maybe invest in some nice light-coloured furnishings to match. The more white and cream furnishings you have in your home, the brighter it will appear. You can always add accents of darker colours but keep these to a minimum.

Consider a wall of glass blocks

Walls made from glass blocks were all the rage in the 1920s and 1980s but they’re making a comeback and they’re perfect for letting in extra light without compromising your privacy.

These glass block walls are perfect for bathrooms as they let lots of natural light in but keep prying eyes out. You could also consider these for either side of your front door and instantly brighten up your entryway.

Increase the light in your kitchen with extra lighting

In the main work areas of your home, you need as much light as possible. Your kitchen is one of these areas and having a bright workspace can make all the difference.

If it’s not possible to let more natural light in by adding more or larger windows or installing a skylight, consider installing task lighting over your workbenches and your sink. This will ensure that these areas are bright and more functional.

You could also consider a glass splashback as this will reflect extra light back into the room.
