If you love living by the water and enjoy a variety of watersports, Lake Boga is the destination for you. But, there’s so much more to this lovely rural area than just the beautiful lake. Sure, the lake is the main attraction but Lake Boga also has a fantastic community that you’ll love being part of.

An interesting history

Lake Boga is the traditional home of the Wamba Wamba people. These traditional inhabitants still have a strong connection to the region and help to manage the cultural heritage of the area.

It was a well-kept secret at the time, but during WWII, Lake Boga was the site of a flying boat base and repair centre. It was the largest inland base in Australia at the time and had as many as 1,000 air force personnel stationed there.

In 2008, during one of Australia’s worst droughts, the lake dried up, leaving the people of Lake Boga facing a cracked and dusty dry lake bed littered with rubbish and a lot of midges.

However, the community of Lake Boga are a resilient lot and they rallied together to clear the rubbish from the dry lake bed. The locals turned out in force to remove discarded fishing rods, thousands of golf balls and 6,000 rounds of ammunition including two live grenades from the bed of the lake.

By April 2009, the community had organised a Dry Lake Bed Dinner that attracted more than 2,000 people from around Australia. The dinner was a huge success and put Lake Boga firmly on the map.

At this time, the government handed out a grant that enabled the local Lions Club to build a new flying boat museum to commemorate the history of the area. This museum now attracts around 20,000 visitors every year.
The great news is the lake is back and better than ever after its cleanup.

A great place to live if you love watersports

After its dry spell, the lake once again refilled with water and thus, the locals could once again enjoy a range of water activities. On any good day, you can see the lake filled with people water skiing, kayaking, fishing, swimming or just sitting on the sandy beach watching the activities on the lake.

There are plenty of walking tracks nearby where you can walk the dog and enjoy some time out in nature. Lake Boga is also a favourite spot for birdwatchers as there are around 68 different species of birds that have been identified as spending time at the lake.

Don’t forget those glorious sunsets. Imagine taking a picnic down to the sandy shores and observing a group of pelicans taking off for the night as the sun slowly sets in the west.

As you sit and watch, the skies start to turn a glorious shade of red and orange while the remains of the sun glistens gold on the water. It’s the perfect spot for some exceptional sunset photography.

Even during the evening, Lake Boga shares its wonders with the locals. Due to minimal light pollution, the night sky lights up spectacularly with all the stars you’re ever likely to see in one place and brighter than you’ll see closer to main town centres.

In fact, there’s also an Observatory and Planetarium in Lake Boga that houses four powerful telescopes just for viewing the night skies.

Lake Boga has plenty of amenities

Although Lake Boga is not far from Swan Hill, it has all the amenities you could possibly want. There are local schools, a local store that sells almost everything you’ll need, a post office, a chemist, a pub and a service station. There’s also a golf course as well as sports grounds for playing footy, netball and cricket.

Plus, Lake Boga is a fantastic community to be part of. There’s a community garden at the back of the general store, a Men’s Shed and plenty of regular community activities and festivals.

For fun and safe community living, Lake Boga really does have it all.
