When it comes to selling your home, decluttering is one of the major objectives so that your interiors look fantastic for the marketing photos. However, it’s important not to make your home look too sterile. You have to remember that prospective buyers want to see themselves living in the home and feel that welcoming vibe when they come for a viewing. You want your home to look clean and tidy but not look like a showroom

Here are some tried-and-true ways to add personality to your home.

Adding some personality to your kitchen

There’s no denying that your kitchen should look clean and tidy but you don’t want it to lose all its warmth in the process. So, once you’ve tidied everything up and have a blank slate to work with, here are some ways to add back a little personality:

  • When adding display items to your kitchen bench, remember to stick to groupings of odd numbers, not even numbers. Plus, they should be in complementary colours. For example, you could place a bowl of lemons over to one side, add a nice pot with some herbs and your best piece of pottery or crockery.
  • If you have a dining table in the kitchen, set the table using some elegant placemats and your best crockery and glassware. Perhaps, you can also add a vase of flowers to the centre of the table to create some height and interest.
  • If you have some great-quality, clean cooking pots, place one on the stovetop.
  • Hang a stylish piece of artwork on a blank wall but just stick to one large piece.
  • If you love to bake, why not get out your best serving plate and fill it with some freshly baked goods such as biscuits, muffins, or cupcakes. Pop this on your island bench. You could even cheat and run down to the local bakery on the morning of the open home to purchase a few delicious pastries.
  • If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, why not create a dedicated coffee station and put on a fresh brew just before the prospective buyers are due to arrive?

Give your living room a warm and inviting personality

Add a little charm and personality to your living room by displaying just a few of your favourite things. Remember that they should be in groupings of three or five and complement each other. The general idea is to use some of your treasures, but not all of them. Here are some ideas:

  • Drape a cosy throw rug over the sofa and add a couple of cushions in luxurious fabrics and complementary colours.
  • Pop a decorative plate on your coffee table and place a couple of candles and a small succulent on it. Make sure that the candles vary in height to add interest.
  • If you have a mantlepiece over a fireplace, find three or five of your most treasured collectibles and place them strategically on the mantle.
  • Hang a gorgeous piece of artwork on the wall behind your couch or sofa. Then, pick some colours from the art and buy three cushions that match those colours. Scatter these on one side of the sofa and make sure that they’re overlapping.
  • Invest in a small side table that you can place in a corner. Then top it with a lamp, a lush green plant, and a large candle. Make sure that you turn the lamp on before the photographer or prospective buyers arrive.

Add some personality to your bedroom

Give your bedroom a relaxed and comfortable feel by adding a few display items and a bit of greenery. Here are some ideas:

  • Add a throw in muted colours to the foot of your bed.
  • Complement the throw with a few cushions scattered at the head of the bed. Make sure you stick to an odd number and don’t overdo it. Just three cushions usually look inviting.
  • If there’s a bare corner in your bedroom, why not add an elegant tall plant? Plants add personality to a home as well as giving it a fresh feel.
  • Make the room look lived in by placing a glass of water and an interesting book on the bedside table. Complement this with a pretty candle or a reading lamp.
