Is your kitchen looking a little tired and no longer inspiring you to be creative while cooking? If your budget doesn’t stretch to a full renovation, there are simple upgrades that you can make in just a weekend if you’re organised and motivated.

1. Update your cupboard doors with a new coat of paint

You don’t have to replace your kitchen cupboards entirely to give them a whole new look. It can be as simple as just taking them off and repainting them. If your kitchen is quite small, consider a light colour such as white or cream to brighten up the area and make it feel larger.

For something a little different, why not consider painting your cupboards in the current popular ‘tuxedo’ style. You can paint the lower cupboards in a darker colour and the top cupboards in white. This will add some glamour and style to your kitchen.

2. Change the hardware for a more modern look

This is a quick and easy way to give your kitchen a whole new look and you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes. Have a look at your local hardware store for the different styles of handles that are available and choose your favourite.

Something that looks really great and is on trend right now is adding black handles to white cupboard doors. You could even match the handles to the new tapware or to match them to your appliances.

3. Update the tapware

Your taps are probably not something that you think about but a new set can make a huge impact on how your kitchen looks. As already mentioned, why not match your new set of taps to the new handles that you’ve put on your cabinetry.

If your budget can stretch just a little further, why not replace the kitchen sink with a brand-new modern style. And, your kitchen sink doesn’t have to be stainless steel either. You could opt for an ultra modern black sink or even a white one depending on the colour of your benchtops. Be aware that you might need more specialised skills to replace your sink.

4. Install some under-cabinet lighting

Nothing brightens up your kitchen more than having plenty of lighting. Under-cabinet lighting is easy to install and adds an extra dimension to your work spaces. You can purchase battery-operated LEDs for this so you won’t need an electrician to install them.

For something unique, you could even put some of these lights under the bottom cupboards at the kickboard level to illuminate the floor area. Try to ensure you buy warm LED lights that give a cosy ambience to your kitchen space.

5. Give the kitchen walls a new coat of paint

Another thing that will instantly uplift the look of your kitchen is a new coat of paint on the walls. If there’s an entire wall that has no cabinets, why not turn it into a feature with a bold paint colour or even some kitchen-themed(washable) wallpaper. Don’t forget to ensure that the colour you choose complements the colour of your cabinets and benchtop.

6. Resurface your benchtops

You might be surprised to learn that it’s quite simple to resurface your current benchtops rather than getting new ones. So, if you’re on a limited budget, visit your local hardware store to see the different products available for resurfacing your existing benchtops.

To get the perfect finish, make sure that you prepare your benchtops first by filling any cracks and sanding them back lightly. Then, apply a laminate paint by following the instructions on the pack.

7. Add a modern mirrored splashback

Mirrored splashbacks are right on trend and can give a little extra gleam to your kitchen. These are available in a variety of colours to complement your cabinets and benchtops. They’re also much easier to keep clean when compared with tiles.
